Obtaining Asylum in the United States

Asylum Green Cards

One year after receiving asylum, the asylee is eligible to apply for Legal Permanent Residence (green card).  The green card will be back-dated one year so that the asylee only has to wait four years to qualify for naturalization instead of five.  The asylee (unlike the refugee) has to pay the filing fee for the I-485 packet but is not interviewed.
